It’s amazing to think that buying a pair of shoes can help change someone’s life. TOMS make that a possibility with their One for One campaign with the aim of supplying a new pair of shoes to a child in need every time a pair is purchased.
The TOMS label was originally founded in 2006 by Blake Mycoskie. The campaign stretches across the globe. There is no single community that TOMS support; they give to as many places as possible. At the last count in 2011, TOMS had given away more than 2,000,000 pairs of shoes worldwide. The One for One campaign developed even further when they extended it to include sight. With each pair of glasses or sunglasses bought from TOMS, they help someone who is visually impaired, either by providing them with a pair of glasses, or with the necessary surgery.
Mycoskie originally started the campaign with shoes because he recognised a need for them in poverty-stricken countries. The aim is to give children a better start in life, in order to improve their health – and hopefully their access to education. Once TOMS identifies a community in need and begins to help them, they continue to do so.
The style of TOMS signature shoes are based on the traditional Argentine alpargata shoe. These are the ones TOMS is most well-known for, although they now have several other styles to choose from as well. The label has developed to include styles for people of all tastes and ages – including vegan shoes. There is such a selection of materials and styles that it’s hard not to find something you like.
So why not try a new way to shop? Shoe shopping can be hard enough to resist at the best of times (for females at least!). However, there’s no need to feel guilty when you shop with TOMS, because you’re shopping for a cause.
