“It All Depends On How You Look At It”
This is how YouTube encapsulates the 2012 US election campaign. It sees it as a process in which perspectives come together to examine various positions, numbers, data, statements, speeches, declarations, addresses, opinions, mandates, caveats – you name it, the campaign deals with it, and YouTube is getting involved by bringing everything to you via the web.
Specifically, YouTube and parent company Google have launched the YouTube Elections Hub, where internet users are able to view footage from the Democratic and Republican conventions, the presidential and vice-presidential debates, and other campaign events. The coverage involves extended live streaming of on-location footage as well as social media platforms such as Google+, Twitter and Facebook.
Joining the YouTube light-up are old school media outlets from across the spectrum, including ABC News, Al-Jazeera English, Univision, and the New York Times, plus new kid on the block Buzzfeed. The simultaneous involvement of these diverse sources will enhance the stream of information, and provide a multiplicity of perspective.

This is a great moment for individuals round the world. Social media are making their impact. Information is now available globally to anyone with an (uncensored) internet connection. Social media seem poised to play a major part in the 2012 election, much like they have in political arenas round the world.

The cynics have a different opinion. They regard this development as a lot of hooey and hot air. Time will tell whether they are right or whether democracy has indeed received an upgrade.
Bottom line is, things can be viewed in many ways. “It all depends on how you look at it.”
