It has been just over 1 year since the Department of Energy officially announced the list of university teams chosen to compete in the Solar Decathlon 2011. On Tuesday night, sponsors, colleagues, friends, and family joined the University of Tennessee’s Solar Decathlon team at their construction site to celebrate the progress of Living Light. Construction of the home is quickly approaching the half way point. The floor and roof decks are complete and the walls are framed. The exterior walls of the two cores have been closed in with plywood sheathing. The electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems also have been roughed in.

The event kicked off with remarks from speakers who each offered a distinct perspective on Living Light, from education and community outreach to interdisciplinary research and industry collaborations. Following the program, all in attendance were invited to tour the construction site and make their mark on the Living Light structure by signing the steel structural frame.

We now find ourselves 4 months and 3 weeks from the start of construction on the National Mall’s West Potomac Park! Our team continues to work at steady pace to design and program the home automation system, develop public education material, and work out the details of our stay in Washington D.C. this fall!
