Weekly / Monthly Writer

Based on your experience and studies, you will be positioning into one of our main verticals: built environment / environment / politics / science & technology.

You will be part of a community of people with very similar interests, a common goal of improvement and a desire to show the world what they’ve got.

Purpose of Role:
- Write consistently
- Improve skills with a strong feedback loop
- Build a visible written portfolio
- Build a strong writing reputation (UT rank)
- Create solid foundation for journalistic / freelance writing careers

Responsibilities & Key Tasks:
- Flexible timing (but be honest and open with other team mates – they’ll know when to pitch in if they know you well enough)
- Working with Managing Editors to make the team exciting and collaborative
- 1 monthly magazine article (longer form, approximately 700-1000 words)
- 1-2 monthly hub article (e.g. microcontent, infographic, video, photography, etc)

Assessment:
- You will be assessed on your ability to deliver the minimum requirement for articles on a weekly/monthly basis (as agreed by you and the Managing Editor)

Managing Editor of Built Environment/Cities

Purpose of Role:
- Becoming a brand ambassador for Urban Times
- Drive the mission statement and vision of your vertical
- Ensuring a bonded and connected team
- Helping team mates with time management
- Constantly growing reading audience, partner network and team

Responsibilities & Key Tasks:
- Delivering a number of pieces of content per day/week for your vertical
- Hosting hangouts, group email threads and an editorial pipeline for your vertical
- Active user acquisition (e.g. friends, family, university departments, bloggers, etc)
- 2 new writers per week
- 5 relevant university departments contacted per week
- 1-2 new publishers / bloggers to syndicate content from per fortnight
- Managing vertical’s Twitter handle (this can be delegated)
- Understand and examine content popularity data and find out what works

Assessment:
- Hitting your content targets and growth levels
- The quality of management of your team
- The growth in your team size

Correspondent for Built Environment/Cities

- A senior member of our content distribution network – perfect for resumés
- Work closely with Managing Editors to ensure your vertical is performing best
- Upkeeping the journalistic prowess of Urban Times

Responsibilities & Key Tasks:
- Pick a vertical or two to be active in
- One weekly magazine article (or as planned with Managing Editor)
- One weekly hub article (or as planned with Managing Editor)
- “On call” to cover big, breaking news stories

Assessment:

Interview Correspondent

As correspondent you will be responsible for conducting interviews with various prominent figures, taking charge of the process from conceptualising and organising through to final realisation of interview. Interview correspondents must be outgoing, proactive and well informed in a variety of subjects, and have strong project management skills. Would particularly suit candidates looking to build a career in broadcast media.

General Editor

Editors play a key role within the Urban Times team, and are responsible for coordinating, copyediting and commissioning writers’ work, submitting high quality articles of their own, and proactively recruiting future contributors. Our content is user-generated and so will vary – breaking news, topical analysis, interviews, miniature posts, investigative journalism, etc. You will gain detailed knowledge of the WordPress platform and an understanding of the criteria that must be present for articles to be of publishable quality.

Editors are responsible for idea generation: finding leads, developing series, and generally furthering the search for great magazine content. They are also expected to write and publish high quality articles of their own, promoting Urban Times’ ethos of optimistic, forward-thinking journalism. (3 Positions Available)

  • People management skills
  • Minimum 3 days per week availability (flexible hours)
  • WordPress experience is desirable but not essential
