London-based industrial design students Rodrigo Garcia Gonzalez, Pierre Paslier and Guillaume Couche have created ‘Ooho’, a water-container you can actually eat after you’ve finished drinking from it.
One of the winners of the second annual Lexus Design Award and soon to be on display during Milan Design Week, the design was inspired by the same culinary technique from molecular gastronomy used to shape liquids into caviar-like structures.
How does it work? It’s a little bit like an egg yolk. The water is held in an edible double membrane, which resembles a thin layer of gel made out of brown algae and calcium chloride. Afterwards, even if you don’t eat the membrane, you needn’t feel guilty about throwing it away, since it’s completely biodegradable.
It’s also so easy to create, that the designers believe people can even make it in their own kitchens!
To top it off, ‘Ooho’ is much cheaper to produce than water bottles. According to the designers, it costs about 2 cents to produce each membrane – five times less than the 10 cents needed to produce a plastic bottle.
Inevitably, there are still some kinks that need to be worked out before the product can be mass-produced and put onto the market. For example, the containers aren’t resealable. There’s also the issue of hygiene and how the package can stay clean while being transported.
Nevertheless, this is a design that can potentially satisfy our need for efficient and sustainable water transportation. As Garcia explains,
“It’s essential for life to drink water, and at the moment, from what I see, we’re not doing it right…I agree that we’re becoming (more) conscious of this problem… but the reality is that we use a lot of bottles that end up in the landfills or in the oceans. I think it’s a real problem that society is not tackling in a serious way.”
