To This Day Project: Bullying [Video]

Shane Koyczan is a Canadian poet and writer who tackles issues on the topic of bullying. With a number of collaborators he has turned his latest piece into a short, animated film with the intention to raise awareness of the issue, and tackle the age-old problem of bullying in schools worldwide. There are over 20 artists contributing to the brilliant illustrations that accompany the poetry narrated by Koyczan himself, and the concept is to show that something amazing can be achieved if people pull together.

On his YouTube channel, and the To This Day Project Website he said:

“My experiences with violence in schools still echo throughout my life, but standing to face the problem has helped me in immeasurable ways. Schools and families are in desperate need of proper tools to confront this problem. This piece is a starting point.”

The To This Day Project has an uncanny similarity to new rap sensation Macklemore’s track “Wings.” The tone and passion of voice from Koyczan and Macklemore are almost identical, and the message from both address the issues of playground politics. Granted, Macklemore deals with the issue a little less seriously than Koyczan and his focus is as much with large corporations taking advantage of consumers as it is with the popularity hierarchy in schools. However, take a look at the rappers piece after you have watched the To This Day Project and I’m sure you will see the likeness too.
