Short Films, Big Ideas: Celebrating Exceptional People and Ideas

Here they are, the Finalists of the Focus Forward Short Film Award. Their concept is simple: Short Films, Big Ideas. Films that put exceptional people or world-changing ideas into the spotlight for just about three minutes.

Here they are, the Finalists of the Focus Forward Short Film Award. Their concept is simple: Short Films, Big Ideas. Films that put exceptional people or world-changing ideas into the spotlight for just about three minutes.

The video we had featured in December, Landfill Harmonic, unfortunately has not been selected – however the selection of finalists is truly impressive.

Have a look and pick one yourself - these are my favourites:

  • Super Supercapacitors - Ultra Efficient Batteries made from Graphene, an extremely light strong and flexible material.
  • Build Yourself - Open Source Machines to literally Build Anything Yourself. Quote: “…there is this mythology of incompetence or power control that got us to think we can’t do things for ourself, but… we have the power! So we inspire people to go out and build themselves”.
  • The Red Dot- A Junior Researcher with a Brilliant Idea – Inspired by nature a high school boy uses proteins from horseshoe crabs to train the immune system of an octopus to detect and destroy cancerous cells.
  • Diamonds on the Inside - A Diamond Chip to test Blood for Cancer from Inside the Body – for example to detect any discrepancy at a very early stage, without waiting forever to get the results of a specialised blood test.

My suggestion: If you have a lazy minute, simply watch all of them. All of these short films showcase the importance of science, creativity and cooperation. The length of the videos is perfect for a coffee break – so what are you waiting for?
