I am a Princess” is Disney’s attempt to re-imagine that aspiration of many, if not every, little girl – to be a princess. While princesses like Mulan and Pocahontas (duh) are strong, somewhat rebellious characters, the Disney precedent for a princess was set by the likes of impressionable characters like Cindarella, Snow White, Ariel or Jasmine. And this means all the frills, fawning over princes and implied patriarchy that comes with them.

Now, in an attempt to disrupt the stereotype that Disney has perpetuated regarding what it means to be a princess, they have released the short video below – filled with young girls surfing, doing archery, science and sport – to tell young girls that the qualities in a princess today are loyalty, trustworthiness, compassion and bravery.

What do you think of the video? Is it damn cheesy (as some of my colleagues exclaimed) or does it carry an important message?
