10 Principles for Good Design from Dieter Rams

The Upvoters that cared:

Dieter Rams worked as a carpenter, architect and interior designer before finally becoming an industrial designer at the electronics company Braun. His design mind is revered across the world and his work has helped to shape some of the most staple domestic electrical products of our generation.

He became concerned, in the 1970s, by the way in which the forms and composition of the modern world was taking shape. This frustration culminated in what some today call the ‘Ten Commandments’ of good design and are a good reminder for designers-in-training or design aficionados alike:

Good Design Is Innovative
Good Design Makes a Product Useful
Good Design Is Aesthetic
Good Design Makes A Product Understandable
Good Design Is Unobtrusive
Good Design Is Honest
Good Design Is Long-lasting
Good Design Is Thorough Down to the Last Detail
Good Design Is Environmentally Friendly
Good Design Is as Little Design as Possible
