The people at Dutch design lab Studio Roosegaarde (designers of the Intimacy Dress) have partnered up with a construction company to create the Smart Highway – billed as the first ‘intelligent highway’ in the world. Some of the earliest concepts will be first tested on a stretch of road in Holland in 2013, possibly paving the way (the obligatory pun of the article) for the rest of Europe.

The technology being tested is: glow-in-the-dark roads, asphalt paint that transforms in response to road conditions, and lanes that double as electric car chargers – the first to aid drivers at night, the second to alert drivers of cold or hot weather, or accidents further down the road, and the last to further advance green transportation technology. These advances will make driving safer, more efficient, and, equally important,  more enjoyable.
