4 Ways of Re-Purposing Denim

Denim is constantly falling in and out of fashion, being re-invented to suit the seasonal trends. Why not recycle your old denim into new pieces giving it your own personal twist? Here are 4 simple ways to rethink your denim:

1. Rip and Tear

Ripped denim shorts.

Ripping and tearing denim is a way of transforming old trousers into new summer shorts. To create a more ragged look fray the ends by pulling the thread.

2. Embellishment

Embellishment is an easy way of enhancing the appearance of old denim into a new piece that will keep you in tune with this season’s trend. These studs give a regular pair of short a new lease of life bringing a hint of punk into your wardrobe style. In this example I’ve attached cone studs to the pocket area. Use as many or as little as wanted for the desired effect.

3. Lace overlay

This a-symmetric lace overlay will add a touch of vintage to your outfit, the cream lace complimenting the denim. Use any scraps of material to suit your style. Can be sewn by hand or machine.

4. Patch pockets

Denim with patch pockets using African print material.

Patch pockets adds an edgy look to your plain denim, choose the fabric scraps according to the style wanted. Tribal prints are used on these shorts, bringing vibrancy and colour  to the denim. To try this look yourself cut out the shape of the original pockets on the fabric wanted, unpick the denim pockets, machine sew on the new fabric sewing 0.5cm around the edge leaving the top edge open.
